What Shows Up on a Background Check? Everything Employers See in 2026

A complete breakdown of what appears on different types of background checks — criminal records, employment history, education, credit, driving records, and more.

What Employers Actually See

A background check can reveal a wide range of information depending on which checks are ordered. Understanding what shows up — and what doesn't — helps both employers and candidates navigate the screening process with realistic expectations.

Criminal Records

Criminal background checks can reveal felony and misdemeanor convictions, pending charges, arrest records (in some states), sex offender registry status, and federal criminal records. The scope depends on whether the employer runs a county, state, or federal check. Most employers run multi-jurisdictional searches that cover all three levels.

What doesn't show up: Sealed or expunged records (in most states), juvenile records, arrests that didn't lead to conviction (in many states), and convictions beyond the 7-year lookback period (in states with time limits).

Employment History

Employment verification confirms previous job titles, dates of employment, and sometimes salary history and reason for leaving. Employers typically verify the last 7-10 years of employment history.

What doesn't show up: Performance reviews, informal feedback from coworkers, reasons for leaving (unless the previous employer voluntarily shares), and employment gaps aren't flagged unless the candidate misrepresented their history.

Education Verification

Education checks verify degrees earned, dates of attendance, majors, and GPA (if requested). This is increasingly important as studies show 30% of resumes contain education misrepresentations.

Credit History

Employment credit checks show credit accounts, payment history, outstanding debts, bankruptcies, and collections. They do NOT show credit scores. Many states restrict when employers can use credit checks in hiring decisions.

Driving Records (MVR)

Motor vehicle record checks reveal license status, traffic violations, DUI/DWI convictions, license suspensions, and accident history. These are typically required for positions involving driving.

Social Media

AI-powered social media screening can flag publicly available content related to violence, illegal activity, discriminatory behavior, or other job-relevant concerns. Reputable providers filter out protected class information to prevent bias.
